Swiss Photo Award 2009 goes to Jacek Pulawski
Jacek Pulawski received the 2009 Swiss Photo Award on Friday in Zurich. This marks the first time the award has gone to Ticino.
Pulawski receives prize money of 15,000 Swiss francs for his work "Un weekend con un transessuale di Chiasso". According to a press release on Friday, Pulawski's classic black-and-white work was convincing in terms of photography as well as the photographer's personal commitment and honest interest in the situation of prostitutes in Ticino.
The prize in the "Editorial Photography" category went to Peter Bohler, Los Angeles, for his images from a US training camp. In the "Free" category, the jury awarded Denis Jutzeler, Petit-Lancy, a prize for his work "Jardin idéal". His picturesque images of forests are more like images of the soul than images of the visible. The "Advertising Photography" category prize went to Jonathan Heyer, Zurich, who quotes American myths and fantasies of omnipotence with an ironic undertone in his work "America in crisis". The jury awarded the photo prize in the "Fine Arts" category to Gabi Vogt's "Galerie des ancêtres" (Zurich). According to the jury, her portraits depict people in an unusual, irritating way. All the works can be seen from May 8 to 16 at the EWZ Selnau substation in Zurich.
A total of 18 works were nominated for the prizes:: Reto Albertalli, Morbio Inferiore; Peter Bohler, Los Angeles; Annette Boutellier, Bern; Patrik Fuchs, Zurich; Denis Jutzeler, Petit-Lancy;
