SSM: CLA demanded for private radio and TV stations

At its delegates' meeting on Friday in Zurich, the Swiss Syndicate of Media Workers SSM advocated a collective labor agreement for private radio and television stations. The delegates criticized precarious working conditions and poor wages.

One must also be ready to guarantee decent working conditions to media professionals if one demands critical, high-quality and independent journalism. The syndicate wrote this in a press release. The SSM delegates were increasingly disturbed by the fact that, with a few exceptions, no collective labor agreements existed at the private radio and television stations. These gaps would result in some cases in precarious working conditions and poor wages. Criticism of "dismantling of the SRG
The radio and television professionals also noted the attacks on SRG and the public service with concern at the delegates' meeting, the statement continued. The SSM has nothing against a critical public discussion about the SRG, its offerings and how these should be financed. However, it vigorously defended itself against the unobjective attacks, especially from the right-wing camp. The "dismantling of the SRG" is obviously connected with the efforts of these circles to exert more influence on newspapers and private radio and TV stations. This is a dangerous development, which is familiar from Italy and which could endanger independent journalism, writes the electronic media union. Populist demands for halving fees or limiting the public service to areas that are not commercially interesting should be clearly rejected.
