Sunday newspaper is weekly newspaper of the year
The Sonntagszeitung has been awarded the title "European Newspaper of the Year" for one year. A twelve-member jury from nine countries awarded the Tamedia newspaper the prize in the weekly newspaper category, which is one of the main categories.
The "European Newspaper Award" is regarded as the most important newspaper competition in Europe, according to a press release. It evaluates concept and design and aims to contribute to new, creative solutions.

A total of 200 newspapers from 27 European countries took part in the competition, which awards prizes in four main categories. The prizes are being awarded for the 16th time this year. Previous winners include Welt am Sonntag, Die Zeit, NZZ am Sonntag and the Sunday Herald. The award ceremony will take place during the "European Newspaper Congress 2015", which will be held at Vienna City Hall between May 3 and 5, 2015.
According to Norbert Küpper, organizer of the award and specialist in newspaper and magazine design, the SonntagsZeitung, which has been published in a completely redesigned new look since April 2014, impresses with its "great visual clarity". With the new design, the SonntagsZeitung is in keeping with the spirit of the times: "With the strong reduction to the essentials, the large images and the clear navigation, the reader is not distracted by decor."
Arthur Rutishauser, Editor-in-Chief of SonntagsZeitung, is delighted with the award: "The prize confirms that we are on the right track and it fills us with pride that we can also visually underline our claim to clarity in newspaper production with the realignment of our layout. Tobias Peier from the Bodara graphics office and our art director Tobias Gaberthuel have done a great job here."
Last spring, in addition to the paper architecture, the appearance of the Sonntagszeitung was also fundamentally revised for the first time since 2007 (Werbewoche.ch reported). The logo is now shown in blue on a white background. For easy reader guidance, each bundle retains its own subtle color. Large-format images take center stage and the layout is based on a modern 12-column grid. The newly selected fonts include "Tiempos Headline" as the title font, while the articles are presented in "Cala", a font with soft contours that give it a flowing rhythm. Aktiv Grotesk" is used as a sans serif font for boxes and legends. The resulting mix of these fonts reflects contemporary newspaper design and meets the requirements for easy readability.
