Public service: study gives regional broadcasters a good report card

Publicom analyzed the coverage of the 2019 elections. The private broadcasters provided particularly balanced coverage.

The study was commissioned by TeleSuisse, the association of regional TV broadcasters, from Publicom. Schweiz am Wochenende reports on it in its current issue. The newspaper belongs to CH Media - the company that also owns numerous regional TV stations such as Tele Züri, Tele M1 and Tele Bärn. The study was co-financed by the Federal Office of Communications (Bakom).

The study rated the regional broadcasters' contributions as more balanced (83%) than those of the SRG (68%). Most of the regional broadcasters' reports (84%) included two or more opinions, while this figure is only 64% for SRG. However, the SRG showed different perspectives more often in its contributions (55%) than the regional broadcasters (41%).

For André Moesch, President of TeleSuisse, the study shows that the public service performance of private broadcasters is "greatly underestimated" and "that not all that glitters is gold at SRG either."

The analysis also shows that the 14 regional TV stations reported more on the 2019 elections than the six SRG stations.
