Swiss media prizes awarded

The Swiss Media Awards for Local Journalism and the Swiss Press Photo 2013 were presented on Friday, April 12, at the Bern City Theater. Laurent Gilliéron won the Swiss Press Photo Award for the second time.

Laurent Gilliéron wins Swiss Press Photographer of the Year for the second time with his picture of the bus accident in the tunnel near Sion. The other winners are Rico Czerwinski (print), Philipp Loser (online), Simon Corthay (radio) and Corinne Eisenring (television). Journalist and Middle East expert Arnold Hottinger was honored with the Reinhardt von Graffenried Lifetime Achievement Award for his life's work. He follows the photographers René Burri (2011) and Robert Frank (2012).

Each of the six award winners was presented with the diamond for their outstanding work and the sum of 20,000 francs. The winners of the Swiss Press Photo category each received CHF 2,000. The publisher-independent Fondation Reinhardt von Graffenried was founded by Franziska and Erwin Reinhardt-Scherz together with Charles von Graffenried - who passed away last July - with the aim of promoting Swiss journalism. 2013 marks the 27th year of the Swiss Prize for Local Journalism and the 22nd for Swiss Press Photo.

Swiss Post is a partner for the award ceremony, which is followed by the open-end party at the Hotel Bellevue.

The yearbook with the best Swiss press photos is published by Benteli Verlag and is available in bookshops. The national touring exhibition "Swiss Press Photo 13" begins on April 19 at the National Museum in Zurich before moving on to Lugano, Bern and Prangins. The iPhone app is available free of charge from the App Store.

The award-winning works at a glance:

The Swiss Media Prize for Local Journalism Print
Rico Czerwinski for "Die Anomalie" published on April 14, 2012 in Das Magazin.
The number of traffic accidents is falling throughout Switzerland. This also applies to public transport companies. But not for VBZ, Zurich's public transport company. Rico Czerwinski has tackled this phenomenon and discovered that VBZ has an extreme work culture that is also very different from that of other transport companies, according to the jury. Why are the accident figures rising? Where is the control system lacking? Czerwinski sheds light on the anomaly in two articles.

The Swiss Media Prize for Local Journalism Online
Philipp Loser for "The Citizens' Agenda", published on August 1, 2012 on Tageswoche.ch.
In the run-up to elections, political parties try to keep themselves in the limelight with all kinds of topics. However, Tageswoche did not want to let the politicians dictate the topics for the 2012 government and Grand Council elections. The editorial team went out into the city districts and listened to the concerns of the population. The most urgent questions were handed over to the candidates to answer. Thanks to detailed evaluations on maps and in databases on a specially developed election portal, the focus of the election coverage was suddenly not on the politicians' slogans, but on the concerns of the citizens - "The Citizens Agenda", according to the jury on their choice.

The Swiss Media Prize for Local Journalism Radio
Simon Corthay for "Intouchables . version Suisse", broadcast on January 28, 2012 in the program "15 minutes" on Radio RTS La 1ère.
No movie moved Switzerland as much in 2012 as "Intouchables". Do such unequal couples also exist in Switzerland? Simon Corthay investigated this question for "La Première" on RTS. It quickly became clear that individual care for quadriplegics in Switzerland is by no means an exception. It also became clear that you don't have to be a billionaire in Switzerland to be able to afford individual care. According to the jury, the result is a multi-layered report on "Intochables", version suisse.

The Swiss Media Prize for Local Journalism Television
Corinne Eisenring for "Low voter turnout" broadcast on February 1, 2012 on Swiss television SRF in "Schweiz Aktuell"
There are 75 voters in the Graubünden municipality of Schnaus. In a cantonal vote at the beginning of 2012, only one of them went to the ballot box. Corinne Eisenring went in search of this person for the Swiss television program "Rundschau". In particular, she met villagers who explained why they had skipped the vote. In the end, she found the distiller Peder Caspescha, whose vote alone determined the result in the municipality.
