Saint Paul closes print shop - 50 jobs gone

Saint-Paul is closing its newspaper printing plant at the end of 2014. The reason is the loss of its most important external customer, the Fribourg News. Around 50 jobs will be lost, as the Fribourg-based print shop announced on Wednesday.

Saint-Paul has been printing the daily newspapers Freiburger Nachrichten (FN) and the French-language La Liberté, which it publishes, for over 100 years. At the end of 2012, the FN announced its intention to print its paper on more financially attractive terms from 2014, the statement said. Without FN, the newspaper printing plant could no longer cover its costs. For 2013, the Group agreed on a compromise price with the FN. In 2014, it can also print the FN, but only at the reference price offered by a third company.

This transitional period should allow employees affected by the restructuring to find new jobs. Likewise, Saint-Paul will look for ways to have La Liberté and other papers it produces, such as La Gruyère, printed outside the canton in the future. (SDA)
