Press Council reprimands Basler Zeitung

The Swiss Press Council has harshly criticized the *Basler Zeitung*: In a letter to Editor-in-Chief Markus Somm, the council accuses the *BaZ* of systematically withholding the Press Council’s statements.

The Press Council further states that BaZ constantly violates the "Declaration of the Duties and Rights of Journalists" and simply does not respect its readers. The Press Council regrets this state of affairs "in the deepest terms", as it says in the letter dated December 24, which is available to the news agency SDA. It had made public on Tuesday the media portal Klein Report. In its rebuke, the Press Council refers to the preamble to the aforementioned statement. According to this it corresponds to fair reporting to publish at least a short summary of the statements of the press council, which concern the own medium. The Press Council is the complaints authority for questions of media ethics. It has no power to impose sanctions; its opinions and recommendations are merely declaratory in nature. (SDA)
