Press Council: Complaint against Blick partially approved

The media may report on accidents. However, they may only identify individuals if there is a public interest that outweighs the need to protect the privacy of those involved.

The Press Council reminds us of this in its statement 18/2012. Blick reported in January 2012: "Banker (27) from Baar dies during diving vacations". The deceased was identifiable on the basis of several statements in the article and a photograph, which is why her sister
Press Council complained. Since the woman involved in the accident was not a person of public interest, the editorial team should have refrained from publishing the photo and other identifying information, the Press Council states in its decision.

In the view of the Press Council, however, the human dignity of the deceased was not violated. Neither they nor their relatives were disparaged in their humanity by the report. Nor did Blick present the facts in a sensational manner.
