Swiss Post no longer has to pay extra for the delivery of Chinese parcels.

Last week, the 192 member countries of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) voted at their congress in Istanbul to make Asian Posts pay more for their cross-border business. According to the Federal Office of Communications, the compensation Swiss Post receives for delivering small consignments from Asia will increase by 13 percent annually between 2018 and 2021. Compensation for registered items is also set to double by 2021.

"We are very pleased with the new solution," says spokesman Oliver Flüeler in response to an inquiry from Handelszeitung. "This brings a clear improvement for Swiss Post compared to the current situation."

Swiss consumers are increasingly buying small electronic parts, cell phone accessories and fashion jewelry from Chinese online retailers such as Aliexpress.com. More than 20,000 small consignments from the Asian region now arrive at Swiss Post's distribution centers every day. Because the UPU has so far classified China as a developing country, the People's Republic has so far been granted preferential conditions in cross-border business. This is now changing.
