Ostschweiz am Sonntag appears for the first time
On March 3, the newspaper Ostschweiz am Sonntag appears for the first time. The paper is published by Tagblatt Medien in St. Gallen.
This means that there will be no fewer than eight Sunday newspapers in German-speaking Switzerland next year, which does not deter the makers. "Sunday continues to gain in importance as a reading day," said Daniel Ehrat in an interview published Saturday in the St. Galler Tagblatt. Ehrat is overall director of Tagblatt Medien, which includes St. Galler Tagblatt. Tagblatt Medien, in turn, is part of the NZZ media group.
So far, there is no newspaper on Sunday that does more than selectively and randomly reflect what's happening in eastern Switzerland, Ehrat said. "Eastern Switzerland does not happen on Sunday." Initial reactions to the announcement of publishing a Sunday edition were therefore positive - "also from the advertising market," he said.
Christian Ortner will be the new editor-in-chief of Ostschweiz am Sonntag. He was previously editor-in-chief of Voralberger Nachrichten. The target is a circulation of at least 90,000 copies. The newspaper will appear as a joint seventh edition of several regional newspapers or regional editions of the St. Galler Tagblatt. Page-maker Ortner will be able to draw on the Tagblatt's central editorial team, which will be expanded by twelve positions. In addition, about a dozen local editorial offices will work on the new newspaper. Ostschweiz am Sonntag itself, however, will appear without separate local sections.
Today, there are already seven Sunday newspapers in German-speaking Switzerland. These are Sonntagsblick, Sonntagszeitung, NZZ am Sonntag, der Sonntag, Zentralschweiz am Sonntag, Südostschweiz am Sonntag and the Sunday edition of the Basler Zeitung. (SDA)
