NZZ am Sonntag named "European Newspaper of the Year

The best European weekly newspaper comes from Switzerland: The NZZ am Sonntag was named European Newspaper of the Year in the «Weekly Newspaper» category.

For the first time, a Swiss newspaper has won a top prize in one of the categories of this competition, which judges the design qualities of newspapers and magazines, according to a statement on Wednesday. The international jury, which is made up of journalists, scientists and designers, justified the choice of the NZZ am Sonntag with its "particularly clear structure" through seven sections and through the "Style" supplement. In particular, the jury emphasized that the readership is "spoiled" with long articles that are "presented in a reader-friendly manner in generous column widths and with a clear page layout." The jury also sees this as the reason why the newspaper has been able to increase its circulation by around 10,000 copies in the last three years. NZZ am Sonntag has a circulation of 130,000 copies and is published in the Berliner format. The newspaper has 41 editors, two art directors and five layouters. The picture desk comprises four people.

A total of 226 newspapers from 27 countries took part in the European Newspaper Award this year. The best newspapers in Europe come from Norway, Denmark, Switzerland and Germany.
