Net-Metrix-Mobile: Share of tablet users quintupled in one year

The Net-Metrix-Mobile special report records the development of mobile internet usage via small screen devices (SSD) and tablets. The latest edition illustrates the boom in mobile internet usage in Switzerland.

Mobile Internet use is becoming increasingly popular: The current and third edition of the special report Net-Metrix-Mobile 2011-2 confirms the trend that so-called small screen devices (SSD) are increasingly being used to access the Internet. These include devices in the mobile phone/smartphone, MP3 player/iPod/PDA or personal organizer categories with a corresponding Internet function. The number of these Internet users has now risen to 2 million since the first survey in summer 2010, which corresponds to four out of ten online users.

According to the press release, the development among SSD heavy users, who surf the web daily or almost daily via smartphones and the like, is even more impressive: This share has grown from 14% to 26% and now accounts for one in four internet users, or 1.4 million Swiss citizens.

The group of Internet users who visit the World Wide Web via tablets and eBook readers is developing very dynamically, albeit at a lower level: This share has more than quintupled since the first survey in 2010. Around 300 thousand Swiss online users are already using Internet services via tablets & co. and this figure is likely to rise as the range of corresponding devices continues to grow.

The Net-Metrix-Mobile special report provides detailed basic information on mobile Internet use in Switzerland. To expand this data to include provider-specific mobile key figures, Net-Metrix will be offering a new independent mobile publication from fall 2011: Swiss providers of mobile offerings can have their mobile sites and apps measured and published in a standardized way. This will provide the Swiss online market with certified and comparable mobile usage data.
