Markus Schär to the Federal Parliament for Weltwoche

Swiss journalist and historian Markus Schär will begin working for *Die Weltwoche* as a freelance Federal Parliament correspondent effective immediately and will be hired as a full-time staff member starting in January 2013. He succeeds Urs Paul Engeler, a longtime *Die Weltwoche* Federal Parliament correspondent.

Engeler will continue to be available to the journal as an author in a reduced capacity. Schär received his doctorate from the University of Zurich under Prof. Rudolf Braun with a thesis on "Seelennöte der Untertanen: Selbstmord, Melancholie und Religion im Alten Zürich 1500-1800" and served as senior assistant. He was then politically active, including as president of the Social Democratic Party of the Canton of Thurgau. Schär worked as a political and economic journalist for various media. From 2004-2006, he had already worked once as an editor at Weltwoche, before moving to the liberal think tank Avenir Suisse as a staff member and author.
