"Young people live news differently" - Franz Fischlin in a podcast with Reto Lipp

How do young people engage with the news, what does quality in journalism mean today, and how can media diversity be preserved in the digital age? Former *Tagesschau* anchor Franz Fischlin discusses these and other topics with Reto Lipp on *Comsumcast*.

Franz Fischlin was the figurehead of Tagesschau for 18 years. After his last TV appearance, he decided not to put his feet up, but to develop journalism further. With Youmedia, his young non-profit project, Fischlin is now focusing on fresh media makers - and is even rewarding their ideas with his own award. In this way, he wants to inspire the social media generation for quality and show what is possible if you have the desire for something new.

In the latest episode of the ZPV (Zürcher Presseverein) and ZPRG (Zürcher PR-Gesellschaft) Consumcast, the media professional talks to Reto Lipp about the big questions that are on everyone's mind: How do young people inform themselves? Why are the traditional media coming under increasing pressure? And what does "quality" actually mean in journalism today? Fischlin is relaxed about the change, but observes that Snapchat and news apps have long since replaced the daily newspaper. Editors must therefore find new ways to attract the attention of young people. Creativity and imagination are more in demand than ever.

Financial concerns are preoccupying the industry. Advertising is declining and hardly anyone wants to pay for journalism. Nevertheless, Fischlin is convinced that those who offer innovative formats and remain open to new approaches will ensure that quality does not remain a question of price. He also believes that the free mentality should not diminish the value of good media.

Fischlin remains curious when it comes to artificial intelligence. AI can make many things easier, but quality, transparency and credibility remain human tasks. And when the discussion about journalism starts at home, he remains fair: with Susanne Wille, his wife and SRG Director General, he clarifies many things in private - professional matters remain professional matters.
