Talks about merger of Bertelsmann-Random House and Penguin

It could mark the beginning of a new chapter in the international book market: Europe's largest media conglomerate, Bertelsmann, and the British publishing house Pearson are in talks about merging their book publishing divisions.

Discussions are underway about a possible merger between Random House and Penguin, Pearson confirmed in London, according to media reports. However, nothing has been decided yet and it is not certain that an agreement will actually be reached.

Pearson's traditional publishing house Penguin is primarily known for its repertoire of classic literature; Random House would add numerous current bestsellers, among other things. (sda)
