Former Prime Minister Major accuses Murdoch of attempted interference in EU policy

Former British Prime Minister John Major has accused Rupert Murdoch of attempting to interfere in the country's European policy. Major spoke on Tuesday before the Ethics Commission, which is tasked with uncovering abuses in the British media landscape.

Shortly before the 1997 election, the media entrepreneur had made it unmistakably clear to him that he would turn against him with his newspapers if the London government did not change course vis-à-vis the EU, said Major. Shortly after the conversation, the two most important Murdoch newspapers at the time - News of the World and The Sun - backed Tony Blair's Labor Party. The Conservative Major was British head of government from 1990 to 1997. (sda)
