Energy Basel: Radio X files license complaint

A licensing complaint is pending against the newly launched Radio Energy Basel. The Federal Office of Communications confirmed receipt of the complaint on Monday. The complaint was submitted by the Basel local radio station Radio X.

The former Radio Basel has been broadcasting as Radio Energy Basel since Friday. In addition to the previous sole owner Karlheinz Kögel, Ringier and the NRJ Group Paris now also hold a combined 15 percent stake. However, Thomas Jenny, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Radio X, has since lodged a complaint.

According to Jenny, OFCOM should have re-approved the license and held a hearing. The proportion of new shareholders is less than the 20 percent that requires approval. However, with the change from Radio Basel to Energy, the program changes so radically that a hearing would have been necessary, he said on request.

Bakom did not yet want to comment on the complaint; it will examine it and then decide on any steps to be taken, said a spokeswoman. In principle, however, a broadcaster is allowed to make changes to the program - for example to the music. However, it must fulfill the performance mandate, which OFCOM is keeping an eye on. (SDA)
