German-speaking Swiss spend around two hours a day watching television

Television remains one of the most popular leisure activities for the Swiss. In the first half of 2014, an average of 65 percent in German-speaking Switzerland watched television every day. The daily usage time was 130.6 minutes. Time-shifted use was also popular.

In the other parts of the country, reach and usage time were higher: In Suisse romande they were 66.4 percent and 146.3 minutes, in Svizzera italiana 74.3 percent and 185.8 minutes. This is shown by the usage data published on Thursday by Mediapulse and Publica Data for the first half of 2014 and a comparison with the first half of 2013. In German-speaking Switzerland, reach and usage time tended to decrease compared to the first half of 2013, the release continues. The situation in Suisse romande was relatively stable, while an increase was observed in Svizzera italiana.

Time-shifted use in trend

In the first half of 2014, 6.2 percent of TV minutes were consumed time-shifted in German-speaking Switzerland, 8 percent in French-speaking Switzerland and 5.6 percent in Ticino. In the 15 to 49 age group, the figure rose to 11.5 percent in Suisse romande. Mediapulse and Publica Data measure and market official television ratings in Switzerland. The daily data from the TV measurement system (Mediapulse TV panel) is used by TV stations for program optimization and by the advertising industry for selling commercials to specific target groups. Since 2013, in addition to live television, the measurement has also recorded the time-shifted use of television programs up to seven days after the initial broadcast.
