The Tages-Anzeiger celebrates its 125th anniversary

To mark its 125th anniversary on Friday, the *Tages-Anzeiger* published a feature article and a special supplement. In light of the turbulent early years and the current media crisis, publisher Pietro Supino emphasized independence as the newspaper’s most important defining characteristic.

The newspaper from Zurich was founded in 1893 by Supino's great-great-grandfather Wilhelm Giradet against the background of industrialization and the political, economic and social upheavals in Switzerland. He wanted to use the paper to disseminate news in a neutral manner and not from a particular party point of view.

Much of what was said in the early days is still valid today, wrote Pietro Editorial, the current Chairman of Tamedia's Board of Directors, on the front page. The goal of the Tages-Anzeiger has remained to inform readers and enable them to form their own opinions. The journalism that the newspaper stands for remains the core of the company.

According to its own figures, the newspaper had just 15 employees when it was launched in 1893. Today, the Tamedia Group, which includes digital platforms, daily and weekly newspapers and magazines, employs around 3,400 people in Switzerland and eight other countries.

Around 1930, an annual subscription to the newspaper cost 25.50 francs, or about 165 francs adjusted for inflation. Currently, the price of an annual subscription is 568 francs. The Tagi has 134,000 subscriptions, around ten percent of which are digital.

The Tamedia media group restructured its newspaper editorial offices at the beginning of 2018. In German-speaking Switzerland and French-speaking Switzerland, two so-called Tamedia editorial offices are being created. These will supply all paid daily newspapers with classified reporting on domestic, international, business and sports topics. (SDA)
