Christian Lindner at the anniversary of the Ringier School of Journalism: Three wishes for journalism today

The Ringier School of Journalism celebrated its 50th anniversary in Zurich in front of about 450 guests. m&k conducted on-site video interviews with Christian Lindner, the German Federal Minister of Finance, and Peter Hossli, the director of the School of Journalism. The focus was on key questions about the future of journalism.

Christian Lindner expressed three central wishes for today's journalism: information and classification should be the focus, without missionary zeal. The danger of clickbait journalism must be avoided so as not to overstimulate society. Finally, Lindner called for more diversity of opinion in order to promote a broader interpretative landscape.

Peter Hossli emphasized the importance of curiosity and commitment. For him, telling good stories and less complaining is one of the keys to the future of journalism. He also made an appeal to the audience: anyone who knows someone who wants to pursue a career in journalism, should contact him directly. Despite the challenges, Hossli is optimistic overall.

The framework of the anniversary

Marc Walder, Frank A. Meyer and Peter Hossli opened the anniversary in front of 450 guests in Zurich Altstetten. They welcomed entrepreneur Nick Hayek, Christian Lindner and Pulitzer Prize winners Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey from the New York Times to the stage. The culinary offerings also reflected the Swiss tradition: classics such as minced meat with Hörnli, bratwurst, fine gelati and pastries provided special treats. And there was plenty of coffee from Nespresso machines to keep you focused, which is particularly important for lively discussions and journalistic work.
