This was announced by Bote der Urschweiz AG in the Thursday edition of the newspaper. The reason given for the closure was that the printing plant was over 40 years old and had become difficult to maintain and operate. The plant had been used two decades ago by the Bernese daily newspaper The Covenant has been taken over.

The option of investing in a new newspaper printing plant has been rejected after thorough examination, Bote der Urschweiz AG announced. In an interview with the Messenger of the Urschweiz publisher Hugo Triner said that tens of millions should have been invested in a new machine. A "very large number" of new print jobs would have had to be won in order to utilize the capacity of a new machine.

The Messenger of the Urschweiz is distributed in a print run of 17,000 copies and has 40,000 readers a day, according to its own figures. 93 percent of subscribers receive the newspaper on paper, as Triner said. (SDA/swi)
