Basler Zeitung to be integrated into Tamedia network

The Basler Zeitung will be integrated into the Tamedia Group's newspaper network: Local coverage will be produced in Basel, while national news will come from the Tamedia newsroom.

Basler Zeitung's publishing house and corporate services will be integrated, and production systems, layouts and production processes will also be standardized, Tamedia announced on Monday. This restructuring, which is expected to last until summer 2019, will create synergies, according to the statement: In the process, Tamedia will "try to offer all employees in these areas a perspective or support them in a professional reorientation."

With the integration of the Basel Newspaper Tamedia wants to maintain the quality and economic independence, and thus the journalistic independence, of the Basel Newspaper received, it continues. The Basel Newspaper will report on all local, regional and cantonal events including business, culture as well as sports with an independent editorial team from Basel. "In the future, it will also bring the perspective of both Basel into Tamedia's newspaper network, thereby gaining national exposure."

The Zurich-based media company is also looking at ways to strengthen the editorial location in Basel. At the same time, the Basler Zeitung will benefit from the Tamedia editorial team's coverage of foreign, domestic, national economic, cultural and sporting events, Tamedia writes.

Who the Basel Newspaper is not yet known. Markus Somm will step down as Editor-in-Chief at the end of 2018. Tamedia will provide information about his successor in due course. The Competition Commission recently approved Tamedia's takeover of Basler Zeitung. (SDA)
