The cantonal governments of French-speaking Switzerland also reject the No Billag initiative

The governments of the cantons in French-speaking Switzerland oppose the No-Billag initiative. They view the popular initiative as an attack on Switzerland’s federal system. Swiss voters will decide on the matter on March 4, 2018.

The SRG reflects the real situation in Switzerland at national, regional and local level, the Conference of Western Swiss Governments (WRK) announced on Monday. In a small multicultural country, no private television or radio station could take on this national task.

The French-, Italian- and Romansh-speaking regions are allocated a higher proportion of the SRG budget than they would be entitled to based on population figures, as the Conference of the Cantons of Geneva, Vaud, Neuchâtel, Valais, Fribourg, Jura and Bern stated.

If the radio and television licenses were auctioned off, the country would be subject to special interests that are far removed from the constitutional principle of equality. The No Billag initiative is an attack on federalist Switzerland. The WRK therefore recommends that it be rejected. (SDA)
