Wiretapping scandal: Rebekah Brooks arrested

Rebekah Brooks, the former head of the News International newspaper group, has been arrested in connection with the phone-hacking scandal in the United Kingdom, according to a report by the TV network Sky News.

On Sunday, the police merely confirmed the arrest of a 43-year-old woman. Brooks—who is that age—was editor-in-chief of the now-defunct newspaper *News of the World* at the time of the phone-hacking scandal. According to Scotland Yard, the woman was summoned to a London police station on Sunday afternoon. She is now being questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to intercept communications and bribery.

Murdoch Apologizes to the Nation

In addition, Rupert Murdoch apologized to the nation on Saturday and Sunday. Full-page newspaper ads on Saturday and Sunday bore the headlines «We’re Sorry» and «Making Amends for What Went Wrong,» in which Murdoch promised to provide clarification. In the ads, which he personally signed, he apologized for causing people «pain.» At the same time, he expressed regret for «not having acted more quickly to set things right.» On Sunday, additional ads appeared on behalf of Murdoch’s British publishing subsidiary, News International, in which the company pledged its full cooperation with investigators. The company also promised compensation payments to those affected by the phone-hacking scandal. «There is no excuse» for what happened, the ads stated.
