70 percent of streaming users surf the web several times a day

Video and audio services are very popular among the Swiss: About 3.5 million people access video and audio content online, and about 600,000 do so daily or almost daily, according to the latest Streaming Report from Net-Metrix.

This shows that users of streaming services generally surf the web very frequently and do so using many devices. The group of streaming users accounts for around 65% of Swiss internet users, or 3.5 million people. This means that around two thirds of online users at least occasionally use streaming services such as web radio or web TV as well as audio and video content on video, news and TV portals. In terms of socio-demographic structures, men continue to be more strongly represented than women (56.7% to 43.3%) and the age group up to 39 years includes the most streaming users (59.9%). Overall, the trend comparison since the first survey in 2011 shows a slow convergence of structures towards the online community.

Streaming users are often on the web

A comparison of the different user groups in terms of the frequency of general internet use shows that users of audio and video content are more likely to be found on the web than the average internet user: 88.3% of streaming users surf the internet daily or almost daily compared to 80.5% of online users. This shows that seven out of ten streaming users even go online several times a day and among streaming heavy users, nine out of ten people surf the web several times a day.

Further differences are also found in the number of devices used to visit the web: At 46.2%, less than half of online users use three or more devices for the internet. Among streaming users, the figure is 54.6% and among streaming-heavy users it is as high as 62.4%. Obviously, the use of video and audio content via the web goes hand in hand with generally frequent internet use, which also takes place across multiple devices.

Video portals most popular

The frequency of use of web content in general and therefore also of various streaming services can also be influenced by socially relevant events. However, a look at the various categories of content since the first survey in 2011 reveals a relatively stable picture: the use of videos on video portals such as YouTube, Clipfish or MyVideo is clearly the most popular. More than one in two online users (53.8%) state that they consume such content several times a month or even more frequently.

The consumption of web radio offerings (34.5%) and web TV content (28.9%) from providers such as Wilmaa, Zattoo or Teleboy are in second place. The share for the audio archive category, such as podcasts, is slightly lower. podcasts (26.8%).
