65th Berlinale: Promising Swiss Films and Actors
Several Swiss productions are featured in the main sections of the 65th Berlinale program.
With "Dora oder Die sexuellen Neurosen unserer Eltern" by Stina Werenfels and "Iraqi Odyssey" by Samir, two films by Zurich production company Dschoint Ventschr have been selected for the "Panoram "a section. The Swiss co-production "Vergine giurata" can be seen in the prestigious "Competition" section. With Sven Schelker, Joel Basman and Kacey Mottet Klein, three young Swiss actors are in the Berlin spotlight.
With her new film "Dora oder Die sexuellen Neurosen unserer Eltern", based on the play of the same name by Lukas Bärfuss, Stina Werenfels is now presenting her second feature film in the Panorama section after "Nachbeben" (2006). Lars Eidinger and Victoria Schulz, who makes her cinema debut in the film, are outstanding. Samir's 3D documentary "Iraqi Odyssey" has already caused a sensation at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Zurich Film Festival and the Abu Dhabi Film Festival. His family story has now also been invited to the Berlinale. The Swiss co-production "Vergine Giurata" has high hopes of winning a bear. The debut film by Italian director Laura Bispuri was co-produced by the Geneva-based production company Borde Cadre Films (Dan Wechsler) and RSI. Alba Rohrwacher and Lars Eidinger can be seen in the leading roles in the Swiss co-production with Italy, Germany, Albania and Kososvo.
The "Panorama Dokumente" section also presents the Swiss co-production "Une jeunesse allemande" by the Geneva-based company Alina Film. The two Geneva co-productions "Gineva" and "Fish Plane, Heart Clock" will be screened in the Forum Expanded. The latter was co-produced by the renowned Centre d'Art Contemporain in Geneva, as is "La isla está encantada con ustedes" by Alexander Carver & Daniel Schmidt, which will be presented in the Berlinale Shorts section. "Sibylle", the graduation film by Schwyz filmmaker Michael Krummenacher at the HFF Munich, was selected for "Perspektive Deutsches Kino".
Ursula Meier and Kacey Mottet Klein in Berlin
The "Generation K+" section features the two Swiss animated films "Der kleine Vogel und das Eichhörnchen" by Lena von Döhren and "Messages dans l'air" by Isabelle Favez as well as Ursula Meier's new short film "Kacey Mottet Klein, naissance d'un acteur". The exceptional young Swiss talent Kacey Mottet Klein first appeared in front of the camera for Ursula Meier's film "Home" and then played the lead role in "Sister" at the age of twelve. The film was awarded the Silver Bear at the 2012 Berlinale. Meier will give an insight into her work with Kacey Mottet Klein and other actors in a panel entitled Basic Trust: Growing Relationships with Actors as part of "Berlinale Talents".
Shooting Star 2015: Sven Schelker
Sven Schelker will represent Switzerland as a shooting star at the 65th Berlinale. The 25-year-old from Basel has been a member of the ensemble at the Thalia Theater Hamburg since 2012. Schelker first appeared in front of the camera for the successful Swiss film "The Circle", which won the Teddy Award and the Panorama Audience Award at last year's Berlinale. Along with him, nine other European actors have been honored as Shooting Stars. This European Film Promotion (EFP) event has become an attractive talent exchange for actors and actresses from all over Europe. One example is Zurich actor Joel Basman, Swiss Shooting Star 2008, who has since gone on to enjoy a remarkable film career. Basman plays a leading role in Andreas Dresen's new film "Als wir träumten", which has also been selected for this year's competition.
