Radio 105 wants Weko investigation against SRG

The Competition Commission is to launch an investigation into SRG for restricting competition.

In a press release, Giuseppe Scaglione calls on the Competition Commission to launch an investigation into SRG for obstructing competition. He is convinced that the SRG is abusing its dominant market position to occupy FM frequencies and thus deprive Radio 105 and other providers of their use. "A level playing field for the SRG and for market participants means: the same number of FM frequencies for local radio stations and private radio stations as for the SRG," writes Scaglione. For him, the SRG is pursuing a pronounced monopoly policy in the radio sector under the heading of public service, which aims to "hinder private competition". In this sense, his Radio 105 was directly affected by the fact that the SRG received a Federal Council license for its competitor Virus shortly after the launch of the private youth radio station. An FM license application from Radio 105 for a regional language youth radio station was rejected by Bakom on the grounds of frequency scarcity. "However, it is more important to question how the scarce resources are distributed," continues Scaglione. In total, SRG occupies around 800 of the approximately 1000 frequencies in Switzerland. This key is justified, among other things, by the quality assurance of the technical supply. However, Scaglione believes it is a fact that the SRG broadcasts far more radio stations via FM than the law provides for (pan).
