Net-Metrix: The small difference online

Men and women don't just behave differently offline; a slight difference can also be seen in their use of the Internet, as shown by the online study Net-Metrix-Profile 2012-2.

Almost 90% of Internet-using men in Switzerland surf the Internet daily or almost daily and are therefore "heavy users". For women, this figure is significantly lower at 73 percent. While there are hardly any gender differences in Internet use at home (around 98% are online), the Net-Metrix figures show a different picture for Internet use at work: almost 70% of working men access the web in the office. Only 53% of female employees are online at work.

There are also some differences in subject interests: While men are particularly interested in technology & research, computer topics or politics on the Internet, women are more likely to search online for articles on health & nutrition, music or faraway countries and travel.

This naturally also has an effect on which websites men and women prefer: of the websites with the highest reach, Blick Online, 20min.ch, Tagesanzeiger.ch and Sf.tv are used more than average by men. Women, on the other hand, surf disproportionately on Search.ch, Local.ch, Homegate.ch and the offerings of Microsoft Advertising Switzerland (Hotmail, MSN). There are hardly any gender differences in the use of Bluewin and Doodle.ch.
