The advertising agency could actually soon be called Matter & Schlatter. The reason: Andy Schlatter joins Matter & Partner as managing partner and consulting manager on January 1, 2002, replacing Erich Baumgartner. There will be no name change for the time being. "This is about a brand. And one that has established itself. Besides, I have no desire for recognition in this respect," says Schlatter.
He has a long-standing relationship with Daniel Matter, based on joint projects for BSSM. Schlatter was hired there as the first consultant in 1981 and remained loyal to the company for eighteen years, 11 of which he was responsible for overall management. He experienced both the change of name to Bosch & Butz and the sale to Lowe at first hand.
Over time, however, the connection to Lowe also fostered a desire for change: "The influence from abroad made me feel more and more that I was ultimately determined by others." As a result, he became self-employed as a marketing and communications consultant. "The idea of self-determination was of course an illusion," he sums up, "as a freelance consultant, you also have to subordinate yourself to the needs of the customer."
Halfway through his three-year period of self-employment, he reunited with Theophil Butz and took over the management of his internet agency RØSA on a mandate basis. However, Schlatter is now ready to become involved in a company again: "As managing director, you're conducting an orchestra, so to speak, and then suddenly you're off as a one-man band. I missed working in a cohesive team." So it was almost fate when Matter and Schlatter met at a petrol station in Meilen in late summer and revived the idea of working together, which had been discussed in the past.
The prospective partner is convinced that he and Matter complement each other perfectly. The latter will be in charge of creation, while Schlatter will take care of consulting, administration and finance. It is important to him that there is no clear dividing line between the two areas: "We both have a strong affinity for the other field of work."
Schlatter's interest in design is reflected not least in his career aspirations as a teenager: to become an architect. This failed due to the recession of the seventies. The impetus for his change of heart came from Schlatter's father, who worked in the communications industry and suggested: "Better do something right, go into advertising." Bruno Amstutz
