Kommtech study 2011: Internet use continues to grow

According to the latest Kommtech study, 85 percent of the Swiss population aged 15 and older already report that they generally use the Internet. Over the course of a year, this figure has increased by more than three percent. Internet use via mobile phones has also risen.

The fixed desktop computer remains the most frequently cited device for accessing the internet. The frequency with which Internet-enabled cell phones are used to surf the Internet has increased significantly. Compared to the previous year, this figure has increased from 12% to 23%.

Even today, television consumption takes place almost exclusively at home. The normal TV set still dominates within the home, although more and more people say they watch TV on a computer screen. As far as the frequency of TV viewing via the Internet is concerned, one in five respondents stated that they use it at least occasionally. However, only 1.4 percent of respondents do this on a daily or almost daily basis.

In addition to the Internet and television, the Kommtech study examines questions relating to radio, mobile telephony, gaming and device use. A total of 2,500 people aged 15 and over in all three parts of the country were surveyed by telephone. The study, which is now in its seventh year, is published by Publica Data in collaboration with the Interessengemeinschaft elektronische Medien (IGEM). Additional information: Publicadata.ch.
