Cable network operators with more customers thanks to telephony and Internet

Cable network operators in Switzerland gained more customers again last year. While the number of customers for telephone and broadband Internet services grew, the largest business segment—television—saw another decline.

Overall, the number of telecommunications subscriptions rose by 0.7 percent to 4.48 million, according to Suissedigital, the industry association for communications networks, on Thursday. In telephony, there was an increase of 96,500 connections. The fixed network contributed 52,700 new customers, an increase of 8 percent. In mobile telephony, the number of customers rose by 43,800.

The Internet is becoming increasingly important: The number of broadband Internet connections rose by 5.6 percent last year to around 1.2 million. The proportion of TV customers who also receive broadband Internet from their provider is now more than 48 percent, according to Suissedigital.

Cable network operators, meanwhile, had to accept a decline in the number of lines in their core business of television. Here, the number of customers fell by 4.9 percent to around 2.5 million.

Suissedigital is made up of around 200 private and public companies from Switzerland and Liechtenstein. They supply around 2.5 million households with radio, television, Internet, telephony and other telecom services. (SDA)
