Under the sign of the red dot
Are you looking for a bold, convincing idea for your annual report or website, for a magazine or book, for household items, furniture or sounds? Then the Red Dot Design exhibition could be just the right inspiration. It is currently making a guest appearance in Basel.
The Red Dot Design Award is one of the most prestigious design competitions in the world. The Essen-based "Design-Zentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen" has been awarding the Red Dot to successful communication design since 2000. The Red Dot is awarded in the categories of product design, communication design and design concept. The award has its origins in the product exhibition of the "Industrieforum e.V.", which was founded in 1955.
Last year, 6112 entries from 42 countries were submitted for the competition. 527 websites, posters, books, calendars, packaging, annual reports, campaigns, TV commercials, video games, corporate design and sound concepts were awarded the Red Dot - making them some of the best communication design in the world. The winning ideas are on show in Dubai, Tokyo, Sydney, Seoul, Moscow, Singapore and Beijing - and can also currently be admired at the Basel School of Design.
Swiss also dotted red
Of course, Swiss work worth seeing is also among the award winners. For example, the Basel agency Schaffner & Conzelmann is represented with the design of the fine food packaging for Coop, the agency Namics, based in Zurich, St. Gallen and Zug, with its corporate design created daily by its employees, and Basel-based Corporate-Sound AG with the sound design for the event ship MS Sonnenkönigin (listen: werbewoche.ch, Webcode 0710Sonnenkoenigin). A number of works surprise with a pleasant pinch of humor, for example the utensils for "Hotel Mama" or the paper shopping bag designed by Frankfurter Merkwürdig GmbH. It shows a pug - and there is a hole where the pug's tongue should actually be. This defect is quickly replaced by a freshly bought shirt, plucked out a little through the hole by the bagging saleswoman. To be or to design, that is the question here.
