Gersau Wins the Title of «Swiss Village of the Year 2026»

Mediterranean charm in the heart of Switzerland: The Rigi village of Gersau in the canton of Schwyz won over the readers of *Schweizer Illustrierte* and *L’illustré* with its distinctive blend of a Mediterranean climate, vibrant history, and a spirit of freedom—and was thus named the «Swiss Village of the Year 2026.» Palm trees, fig trees, and a unique historical status characterize this small village on Lake Lucerne, home to 2,519 residents.

Once the Smallest Country in Europe

For nearly four centuries—from 1390 to 1817—the «Altfrye Republic of Gersau» was the smallest independent state in Europe. This spirit of independence lives on in the village community to this day: with its own currency, the Gersau guilder, the municipality keeps this special tradition alive. Inscriptions in the historic town center serve as reminders of its unique history. Now, with the title «Swiss Village of the Year 2026,» Gersau is writing a new chapter.

In the final, the Schwyz municipality prevailed over five top-tier finalist villages: Albinen (VS), Bönigen (BE), Bosco/Gurin (TI), Saint-Saphorin (VD), and Vella (GR). News of the award spread quickly along the shores of Lake Lucerne and, according to the press release, brought genuine joy to the community.

«Despite our somewhat secluded location, we are a cosmopolitan and hospitable village that people from nearly 60 nations call home. We cherish and take pride in our independence, but we’re just as proud that we’re recognized nationally and beyond Schwyz as a beautiful corner of the world. We’ll celebrate the title in style,» says District President Sandra Häusler.

Ceremonial Handover on August 21

On August 21, the title will be officially presented to the residents of Gersau during a festive ceremony. Representatives from the editorial boards of *Schweizer Illustrierte* and *L’illustré*, as well as from the main partners, Volg and Suzuki, will present the award in person.

In recent years, users and readers have already selected Ascona, TI (2025), Murten-Morat, FR (2024), Zäziwil, BE (2023), Urnäsch, AR (2022), La Punt Chamues-ch GR (2021), Ruswil LU (2020), Trub BE (2019), Oberhofen BE (2018), Schwellbrunn AR (2017), and Morcote TI (2016) as the «Swiss Village of the Year» and the «Most Beautiful Village in Switzerland,» respectively.
