"Action" for Talent Screen
Film Wirz Werbung promotes a pitch for newcomers with fresh ideas for cinema, TV and advertising.
Film Wirz Werbung promotes a pitch for newcomers with fresh ideas for cinema, TV and advertising.
Competitions in which prizes are awarded for finished works are multiplying with an inflationary tendency. What is new, however, is a film competition in which the talents of the future also get their chance. An outstanding idea - but so far no money for professional realization: anyone suffering from this industry malady will find help with the first edition of Talent Screen. The event was the brainchild of young film producers Stefan Zuber, Min Li Marti and Philip Delaquis and their project office Das Kollektiv GmbH in Zurich. Talent Screen aims to establish itself as a platform for new filmmakers and already enjoys the patronage of the Federal Office of Culture of the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA). For the promotion, the film enthusiasts were able to get Wirz Werbung on board for a comprehensive campaign, with Tages-Anzeiger and Cinecom as the most important sponsors, as well as Ultra Images and JingleJungle Sounddesign for the design of a cinema spot.
The "Grümpelturnier für Filmtalente" will be launched at the same time as, but independently of, the first edition of the new Zurich Film Festival, which will take place from October 5 to 9 at the Hochschule für
Design and Art takes place (www.zurichfilmfestival.org).
The Talent Screen on October 7 consists of two different competitions, a "Pitch Battle" based on the "Poetry Slam" system and a creative "Movie Marathon" course.
Audience applause decides
In the "Pitch Battle", authors have to compete with their film idea for a feature film of 60 minutes or more. The participants compete against each other in a cup system and only have five minutes to present their idea to the audience. All they have is a stage and a microphone. The volume of the audience's applause decides who advances to the next round. At the end, the "Pitch Talent 2005" remains.
This talent will be rewarded with an Apple Powerbook and a bottle of whiskey and will be allowed to stay at the Hotel Lenkerhof for three weeks free of charge in order to turn the idea into a screenplay-ready version.
A maximum of eight people are admitted to the pitch. If more ideas are submitted, there will be a pre-selection. This jury includes producers Meret Nora Burger and Valentin Greutert as well as screenwriter Micha Lewinsky, who has just been awarded a Young Talent Leopard in Locarno.
In addition to ideas, the second competition is also about technical talent. "Movie Marathon" means: 48 hours, 0 budget and the chance to make a short film that will be seen. At 12 noon sharp on Tuesday, October 4, participants will be handed an envelope with a theme. Then it's "camera, action", and the teams fan out to return after 48 hours with a competition entry no longer than five minutes.
The best works will be shown on October 7 at the Talent Screen in Zurich's Mascotte. The audience chooses the winner by clapping. The winning team receives a trophy and the "Film Talent 2005" award. This title is intended to help them find a job and money in the film scene. The five best teams can also take part in a "Talent Academy". Here, industry professionals will provide feedback.
The "Marathon" jury includes CD director Matthias Freuler, producer Andres Brütsch, director Christoph Schaub and film journalist Irene Genhart. You can register for both competitions at www.talentscreen.ch, where you will also find further information.
Advertisers can also benefitYoung talents from the advertising industry are also welcome at Talent Screen, whether as future directing talent for commercials or as suppliers of ideas for films. Conversely, established advertisers should be able to talk to potential employees about the competition. To initiate this process of exchanging ideas with new talent, Wirz Werbung is helping with three advertisements in the Tages-Anzeiger that are boldly looking for new film stars.
The subjects are designed like Broadway movie signs and are intended to encourage people to take part in the competition. In a second phase, a flyer for October 7 is intended to attract around 400 interested people to the event in Zurich's Mascotte.
The commercial, which was realized by Wirz Werbung with Ultra Images and JingleJungle, itself looks award-winning with its idea of showing only the title and credits in a few seconds to dramatic music. In between you can hear wind and a scream. The rest of the content is up to the participants in the competition. The spot will be shown by Cinecom via the new digital network in German and French in all major art house cinemas in Switzerland. (pan)
