Last but not least: Jingle Bills
Edeka surprised its customers with a Christmas carol—played on the checkout scanners.
The German food retailer Edeka publishes the obligatory Christmas ad right on time for the first Advent and has it posted on high-reach blogs for a fee for the sake of virality (e.g. DRLIMA). Captured by 13 hidden cameras, Edeka surprised its customers one fine shopping day with a spontaneous Christmas serenade - played by the cashiers, who were presumably practiced musicians. The highlight: the music was played with the scanning devices, which formed a large instrument with their different tones. The result was the "Checkout Symphony" - a version of "Jingle Bells" reminiscent of the 8-bit soundtracks of video games from past decades. The cash register sounds were underlaid with the rhythms of former European beatbox champion Robeat.

According to Edeka, this is exactly what happened. And the unsuspecting customers were completely surprised and were immediately captivated by the music. In the end, half the store was dancing - as is usual with viral hidden camera jokes. And presumably the elaborately choreographed performance worked on the first attempt and was then in the can. Of course, we like to believe that, again and again. (hae)
