Last but not least: Italy hides the lexicon

The Italian Parliament is debating a bill that, according to Wikipedians, threatens the very existence of the collaborative encyclopedia. For this reason, the encyclopedia has now been hidden.

The Italian website of the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia has been unavailable since Tuesday. The reason for this is the "DDL intercettazioni" (interception measures) law, which is currently being debated in parliament. Should parliament pass the law, this could mean the end of Wikipedia Italy, as Netzwoche writes on Thursday. The law envisages obliging website operators to make any corrections to content within 48 hours without comment. There is no provision for marking the change or for an independent body to check the facts of the case. Wikipedians are now protesting against this by hiding Wikipedia. If you go to the homepage, you will be redirected to the Wikipedians' statement. However, the reactions to this action have not gone unnoticed. An online petition to save Wikipedia has already been launched.
