Last but not least: God and football united
Churches are increasingly empty. But instead of simply standing by and watching this happen, some Reformed congregations in Switzerland are now taking the initiative to make their churches more appealing again.
The church remains empty more and more often. But instead of simply standing idly by, some Reformed church congregations in Switzerland are now taking the initiative and want to make the place of worship more attractive again. Together with the free churches, they have joined forces to form the Swiss Evangelical Alliance (SEA) in order to curb the loss of members and are taking an unusual measure: the church is bringing another, typical Sunday activity into the house - football. During Euro 08, the SEA wants to broadcast the soccer games live on big screens in 500 churches. The initiators have already landed two major sponsors for the idea. And those who want to follow the games live in the stadium instead of in the church will not have to do without the church. So-called stadium churches are to be set up in Basel, Bern, Geneva and Zurich.
