Last but not least: Earning money with gaming

Blockbuster games like «Guitar Hero» and new formats such as browser and social community games like «Dark Orbit» have been driving excellent growth rates in the gaming industry for years, resulting in very good career prospects. Accordingly, there is a high demand for well-trained professionals who can continue to drive the market forward. Yet it is precisely these professionals who are in short supply in Germany.

That's why some companies are making the journey from Hamburg to Munich on February 18 to take part in the "Recruiting Day" between companies from the games industry and Qantm students. This will take place at the Qantm Institute, a training facility for game developers and subsidiary of the SAE Institute. It is currently difficult for companies in the games industry to find suitable graduates, says Götz Hannemann, Head of Marketing at the SAE Institute. For many companies, neither the budgets nor the ideas and perspectives are an obstacle to economic growth, but rather the lack of specialists and managers.
In 2009, sales of computer and video games in Germany alone amounted to around 1.56 billion euros. Analysts estimate that a similarly good result was achieved in 2010. These figures illustrate the importance of the games industry as an economic sector. Well-known games companies such as Big Point, Gamigo, 49Games, DTP Entertainment and Innogames are planning a large number of new hires this year.
The Qantm Institute in Germany offers training programs in the fields of game design and development as well as animation. The so-called "Interactive Entertainment Program", with a focus on both programming and design, prepares students for a career in the professional computer games industry. One of Qantm's trademarks is its practice-oriented training concept. Qantm students are actively involved in projects right from the start and are quickly introduced to the work of game developers, so that they are prepared to earn money with games as soon as the entrepreneurs from the games industry arrive in Hamburg.
