Last but not least: Into the fight against the death of journalists

The cliché of the journalist who smokes all the time, which we were able to defuse some time ago in this very column, now seems to have a grain of truth to it: A study has shown that Chinese media professionals suffer from catastrophic health problems.

The cliché of the journalist who smokes all the time, which we managed to defuse some time ago in this very section (see Last but not least: The journalist and the cigarette), there does seem to be a grain of truth to it: A study by the Chinese Medical Association, based on 23,640 examinations, has revealed that China's journalists suffer from catastrophic health. In addition to irregular sleeping and eating times and a lack of exercise, cigarettes are also to blame.
We're not talking about the odd frustrated media professional who tries to smoke their writer's block out of their head and forgets to eat lunch. No, a whopping 97.5 percent of all Chinese journalists are said to be in "suboptimal health" and suffer from "physical weakness, low vitality and a weak immune system". It doesn't even need to get that far in our circles. Therefore: Bring on the Power Plate, 5-course lunch catering and sleeping facilities for everyone in the Werbewoche editorial offices. This is the only way to avert disaster. And with such a healthy lifestyle, a cigarette or two will probably be allowed again.
