The impressive DNA of the G-Class

The launch video for the new G-Class shows that when it comes to DNA, no one can hold a candle to the Mercedes SUV.

In fossilized tree resin - better known as amber - insects and other microorganisms are preserved for millions of years so well that their DNA is easily preserved.

Although the DNA of the Mercedes G-Class has not lasted quite as long, it is still incredibly old by automotive standards. Launched in 1979, the former forester's vehicle has lost incredibly little of its original design to this day. As far as the basic shape is concerned, no other car model can keep up with it, even if the once spartan interior has since given way to pure luxury. Angular, bulky, robust and unreasonable - the aerodynamic drag of the G-Class body is about as big as the fan base of the Mercedes off-roader. Once a workhorse, today a status symbol.

Even if everything remains the same once again: in 2018, Mercedes presented a completely revised version of the longest-serving model in its fleet at the North American International Auto Show. Among other things, the now outdated chassis has been brought into the 21st century and the interior has been updated with the latest technology. The new G-Class will be available from around 136,000 Swiss francs from June.

Until then, you can watch the launch film "Stronger than Time", which is well worth seeing. The fact that the G-Class will probably outlast us all is skillfully staged by the Berlin agency Antoni and the Hamburg production company Sehsucht. Big appearance, big effect - just like the car. (hae)
