Cookies for Cookies

If you accept Subway's cookies now, you'll get... cookies.

Cookie notices are omnipresent on the Internet. You accept them to make them disappear. Since the EU introduced the so-called "Cookie Directive" at the end of 2009, we are increasingly being asked to allow the use of cookies at the click of a mouse when we visit websites. A well-intentioned alibi exercise - or at least a start.

The general legal situation is (still) largely unclear, as the individual EU countries must first convert the directive into law before it becomes binding. However, Google has long since made the cookie permission procedure mandatory for all websites that participate in its AdSense marketing program. The internet giant, which has repeatedly been in conflict with European data protection authorities, has thus been proactively preventing further impending conflicts with the EU since 2015 - anticipatory obedience.

The Subway snack chain in the UK and Ireland is also taking a proactive approach to countering customers' fading nerves. Anyone who accepts the use of small snooping files on Subway websites receives a voucher for real cookies in return. At least it's something. Annoying becomes sweet. The idea for the campaign came from the McCann London agency. (hae)
