Brave Face

TBWA encourages young people to talk about suicidal thoughts.

The charity organization Papyrus is aimed specifically at young people who are considering taking their own lives. Suicide is the most common cause of death among under-35s in the UK. In figures: in 2015, 1659 young people chose suicide as the only way out of a supposedly hopeless situation. With the right approach from a qualified person of trust, one or two young lives could certainly be saved.

Perhaps the current prevention campaign #BraveFace will succeed in persuading potential suicides to confide in the environment (or Papyrus). After all, the reality behind the superficial, embellished facade of social media is often far less glamorous than it appears from the outside. It's easy to hide behind a profile and put on a brave face, i.e. pretend to be indifferent.

The social media campaign encourages people to raise the subject of suicide if they suspect it. And it gives Advicehow the difficult introduction to the conversation can be successful. After all, a question about the topic is often enough to help those affected to talk about their dark thoughts and plans. And talking never increases the risk of suicide, say the experts. They offer, for example, specific Conversation Starters. (hae)
