Aldi UK opens Christmas campaign season - with Robbie Williams as carrot

Aldi declares the end of Brussels sprout dominance at Christmas in the UK. And Robbie Williams is competing as a carrot.

Kevin the Carrot is becoming Aldi UK's Christmas figurehead par excellence. He first appeared in the 2016 "Christmas Carrot" spot, only to make a celebrated comeback in 2018 in "Kevin the Carrot and the wicked Parsnip." McCann UK isn't thinking of leaving the nation's carrot in the crisper this year either.

In the 2019 spot, Kevin falls into the clutches of Russell Sprout and his gang Leafy Blinders. They actually believe that only Brussels sprouts should be served at Christmas. In Great Britain, Brussels sprouts are a traditional side dish for the holiday feast. Why the little cabbage became a Christmas hit, one does not know so exactly. Food historians suggest that Brussels sprouts became popular at the same time that Christmas, as we celebrate it today, began to appear in Europe. Seasonally, the timing also makes sense - and last but not least, it is believed that in the 20th century, marketing played a major role in making Brussels sprouts a part of the Christmas table on the island.

Heard, because since Aldi (and every other store) has such a rich selection of vegetables on offer, the variety over the holidays can not be big enough. So big, in fact, that Robbie Williams has re-sung his global hit "Let me entertain you" and the vegetable circus becomes a spectacle.
