Nagra and Schroten: The magazine of the century is dedicated to risk

What is risk? How risky is risk? Can risk be delegated? The new issue of Nagra's magazine of the century "500m+" poses these questions - and attempts to answer them with the help of experts from a wide range of fields.

Lord Martin Rees, founder of the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge, explains in an interview with Sebastian Sele what the greatest risks to humanity are and where political leaders have a blind spot. The renowned business psychologist Christian Fichter explores how companies and entrepreneurs should deal with risks.

Author David Fehr explores the cultural risk imprint, Michèle Roten talks to a budding forest warden - statistically the riskiest profession in Switzerland - and Nicola Brusa visits the rock laboratory in Mont Terri in the Jura. There he finds out how Nagra has eliminated the risks of deep geological repositories step by step in recent years and what is currently on its mind.

Humor as an approach to a serious topic

The reports, essays and interviews are framed and enriched by illustrations by the well-known German artist Anna Haifisch. On seven double-page spreads, she paints her own risk scenarios for the Swiss deep geological repository. "In my imagination, the greatest risk is usually posed by banalities that could trigger a chain of unfavorable events," says Haifisch. For example, her pictures show martens biting through cables or herds of cattle eroding the soil. "I think you HAVE to approach such a serious and oversized topic with a dose of humor. Without making fun of it, of course."

This time, "500m+" is a multi-voiced print and online magazine with reportage images by Florian Kalotay and a documentary film lasting around five minutes, which was created in collaboration with the production company Mattogrosso.

Excellent concept

The Zurich-based storytelling agency Schroten has been responsible for Nagra's magazine of the century for four years now. The concept of publishing a versatile, monothematic magazine every year until the closure of the Swiss deep geological repository has won awards: Schroten was presented with a Grand Prix for the first three issues at the 23rd Best of Content Marketing Awards in Munich.
