Solidar Suisse and Spina's Civil Voices launch campaign against Black Friday

With the support of Spina's Civil Voices, Solidar Suisse is launching a national campaign for the abolition of "Black Friday". In a petition, the nonprofit organization is calling on the Swiss Retail Association to put an end to the excessive consumer orgy in Switzerland.

Black Friday KampagneAt a time when the world is in the midst of a climate and environmental crisis, sales like "Black Friday" would encourage even more excessive thoughtless shopping, the NGO writes in a statement. This "senseless overconsumption" generates more CO2 emissions and intensifies the exploitation of natural resources.

The pressure on prices in the rich countries of the North also has a detrimental effect on millions of workers in the producing countries, who manufacture the bargains at starvation wages. The flip side of absurdly high discounts is inhumane wage depression in the low-wage countries.

Petition to Christa Markwalder

Therefore, Solidar Suisse launched on Tuesday the "Stop Black Friday" petition. The organization is calling on Christa Markwalder, President of the Swiss Retail Federation, to actively campaign for the abolition of "Black Friday".

Together with national organizations, associations and politicians, Solidar Suisse is fighting to stop consumerism and the associated wage dumping, poor working conditions and exploitation: Climate Strike Switzerland, members of the SP such as Tamara Funiciello and Carlo Sommaruga as well as Green Switzerland President Balthasar Glättli support the campaign.

Campaign aims to raise awareness among the population

In order to raise awareness among the Swiss population and call on them to sign the petition, Solidar Suisse is conducting a broad-based campaign. This includes a video showing the disastrous ecological and social effects of excessive consumption on "Black Friday". In addition, there are prerolls on Youtube, native ads and social media, as well as email journeys. Further actions are planned. All measures lead to the Landing page, where several thousand signatures were collected already on the first day of the campaign.
