Lugano declares war on dog piles

The city of Lugano appeals to its dog owners: They should behave more civilly and dispose of their animals' excrement more consistently. A two-month campaign is to help them on their way.

About 4600 dogs live in Lugano as pets, as the city of Lugano writes in a statement on Thursday. At least twice a day they are taken for a walk by their owners - and of course they also do their business.

Around 30 owners who live and walk in various places in and around Lugano do not comply with the collection obligation. 30 seems little, writes the city and calculates: 30 dogs times two walks makes 60 piles per day, which disturb all other residents and visitors. At the train station, for example, around 16,000 passers-by are on the move every day.

"Screwed up"

During two months, Lugano now wants to sensitize the offending dog owners with a campaign to behave "civilized" towards others, as the city writes. For October and November, various communication measures are planned.

Among other things, all owners of registered dogs in Lugano will receive a letter. Furthermore, posters can be seen in the streets and videos in the social media. The admonishing slogan is in Italian "L'hai fatta grossa!" - literally translated "You made it big", in a figurative sense about "You messed up". (SDA)
