TikTok launches new in-app hub for Safer Internet Day

To mark Safer Internet Day, TikTok is expanding its commitment to digital safety and launching a new in-app hub for Europe, the United Kingdom, and Israel. The platform offers tips and tools to help users stay safe online.

With a new in-app hub, TikTok wants to support its communities in Europe, the UK and Israel in navigating the digital world safely on Safer Internet Day 2024. The hub provides practical tips, effective tools and in-depth information to ensure a self-determined user experience on the platform. After over one million visits in the previous year, the offering is to be expanded further in 2025.

Individual control over the TikTok experience

Users have a wide range of options to customize their experience on TikTok to suit their needs:

  • Account settings: The privacy options for "discoverability" can be used to determine who is allowed to see your account and content. The "Supervised mode" helps families and legal guardians to use the app safely together with young people.
  • Community settings: Here you can determine who can follow, send messages or comment on and share content.
  • Content settings: The filter for keywords and the restricted mode for personalized recommendations allow content to be controlled more specifically.

Respectful exchange and protection from disinformation

TikTok is committed to respectful cooperation and encourages users to report harmful content instead of spreading it. "TikTok does not tolerate bullying or hate" - such content is consistently removed. Cooperation with fact-checkers helps to identify and reduce disinformation. Users are encouraged to critically scrutinize questionable content and report it if necessary.

Promoting digital balance

With tools such as the screen time dashboard and individual break settings, you can reflect on your own usage behavior. The Well-Being Guide from TikTok offers additional tips for a conscious digital life.

Safer Internet Day is an important reminder of how crucial online safety is - for TikTok, this issue is a top priority all year round. From removing harmful content to continuously investing billions in security, TikTok is committed to ensuring that the entertainment platform remains a safe place for everyone.

At the beginning of this year, TikTok published a handbook for teachers to support them in guiding pupils in the digital world. The 18-page handbook offers practical advice on how to use the platform consciously and safely. From basic questions such as "What is TikTok?" to tips on screen time and how to deal with complex issues such as online challenges, hate speech and misinformation, the handbook covers a wide range of relevant areas.

For parents and guardians there is also the Guide for parents and guardians. TikTok also offers a dedicated youth safety center to help young people understand the platform and its safety features.

The new #SaferTogether Hub is online as of today (Tiktok recommends opening the hub in the TikTok app).

At the launch, the community will receive a push notification to the #SaferTogether hub, where further information on the safety features will be available. Well-known creators such as @NikLugi have also contributed their experience to raise awareness of digital wellbeing.
