According to the news website The Information LinkedIn wants to compete with other freelancer platforms such as Upwork or Fiverr with Marketplaces. The platform primarily intends to offer its approximately 740 million users worldwide more professional opportunities. This should increase their activities and create more opportunities for advertising.

LinkedIn already has a tool for finding freelancers called "ProFinder". This feature allows companies to search for candidates for projects based on specific job fields. Marketplaces, however, is designed to make it easier to connect and do business with freelancers.
