The European Football Championship, as a major international sporting event, was the most preoccupying topic for the Swiss. EM 2016 is the most popular search term in 2016 and thus recorded the strongest increase ahead of the iPhone 7 and the gaming phenomenon Pokémon Go, which kept Switzerland in suspense in the summer. In addition, political topics such as Brexit and Donald Trump also attracted a great deal of interest.

Brexit and Donald Trump moved the minds

A look at the list of "scandals and upsets" shows which topics moved people in Switzerland in 2016. The biggest increase in search queries was recorded by the British EU exit decision Brexit ahead of the new President of the USA, Donald Trump. In third place comes Sarah Lombardiwho was very present in public reporting at the end of the year due to her breakup with Pietro Lombardi. In fourth place could Hillary Clinton, the failed U.S. presidential candidate. The only Swiss result to land is the decision and negotiations surrounding the Enforcement Initiative in fifth place.

The other ranks are occupied by the actress Meghan Markle, who made headlines for her relationship with Prince Harry, and the Panama Papers-scandal, in which confidential data from the Mossack Fonseca law firm was leaked to the public. In addition, the daughter of the US president-elect, Ivanka Trump, the French actress Marion Cotillard and the new First Lady of the USA, Melania Trump, triggered numerous searches.

People 2016: Tamy Glauser, Irina Beller and Gianni Infantino

This year, Google Switzerland has again evaluated the search queries for the most popular Swiss celebrities. In particular, celebrities from the entertainment industry, sports and society are represented. At the top is Tamy Glauserwho made a name for herself not only as an androgynous model, but also through her relationship with Dominique Rinderknecht. In second place is Irina Bellerfollowed by the newly elected Fifa President Gianni Infantino.

Other celebrities who have gained particular search interest this year include the rapper Bligg, the coach of the Swiss national team Vladimir Petkovic and the Bachelor Janosch Nietlispach. But also the singer Marc Amacherwho thrilled the audience at The Voice of Germany, Divertimento star Jonny Fischer and Jason Brueggerwho was named the biggest Swiss talent of 2016, triggered many searches.

In 2016, however, big names, especially from the music industry, have also passed away. Not surprisingly, two music stars are on the first places of the list of deceased in 2016. Place 1 takes David Bowie followed by Prince. In third place comes the well-known actor Bud Spencer.

Swiss Hits: Tour de Suisse, Lugano and Monte Tamaro

At the top of the "Swiss Events" category is the Tour de Suisse 2016 a sports event on the podium, closely followed by the Paléo Festival (which had to give up last year's first place to the Tour de Suisse) and the Federal Wrestling Festival. Then follow with the Züri Fäscht and the Olma two major events in Swiss cities.

In the category "Cities and villages" stands Lugano from Lausanne and Zurich at the top. Like the city, the mountain with the biggest increase in search queries also comes from Ticino: The Monte Tamaro has secured first place ahead of the Pilatus and the Piz Bernina secured.

Ok Google: "How does Pokémon Go work?"

Voice search via smartphone has tripled worldwide over the last two years. As a result, Google is increasingly becoming an assistant in everyday life, providing answers and assistance with everyday questions. The questions asked were evaluated and listed on Google Switzerland's "What are....?" and "How does...?" lists. In 2016, people were particularly interested in what putschists, Panama Papers or electoral college are. In addition, current styling trends seem to be reflected in the search queries: the question "How do I make my beard grow evenly?" kept the gentlemen of creation very busy. "How do I make a backup?" and "How do I turn dark chocolate into milk chocolate?" landed in the subsequent places. The Swiss also sought advice on one of the most popular search terms: "How does Pokémon work?" took first place ahead of "How does the U.S. election work?" and "How does a muffler work?
