Half to three quarters of companies use social media

According to Eurostat, half of all companies in the EU use social media. According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), this also corresponds to the average in Switzerland. In eleven European countries - three of which are outside the EU - usage is as high as three quarters.

The frontrunner is Malta: 84% of all companies there say they use the economic potential of social platforms. This is followed by Denmark, the Netherlands, Cyprus, Sweden, Belgium, Ireland and Finland with a descending 75 to 71 percent. Social media are comparatively unpopular in companies in Romania, Bulgaria, Poland and Hungary, where 33 to 38 percent of companies make use of them.

Companies have made extreme progress in the last five years when it comes to integrating social media. This is shown by figures published by the EU's statistical office (Eurostat) on Tuesday. British companies were among the most diligent, increasing their use of social media from 44% in 2014 to 72% in 2019. Similar growth rates were also achieved in Denmark, Sweden and Finland.

In Switzerland, the use of social media increased from 38% in 2015 to 50% in 2017 (FSO). This development is pretty much in line with the EU average.

Greece, Spain, Croatia, Portugal and Slovenia saw a similarly slow increase in this respect (from just under 40% to just over 50%). The increase in Iceland was also relatively low at 12%. However, companies in this country had already reached a very high level of social media use in 2015 (63%). (SDA)
